Why Fibreglass Is the Most Important Material in Sports Car History
Before fibreglass, building a sports car body required a factory, a fortune, or both. Steel press dies cost millions. Hand-beaten aluminium took decades to master. The dream of building your own sports car was exactly that — a dream. Then a material developed to protect wartime radar equipment changed everything. This is the story of how glass-reinforced plastic dismantled the barriers that locked small builders out of car manufacturing for half a century — and how that same fundamental idea still puts extraordinary cars into two-car garages today. In this episode, Dave Lassell from the HiCost Locost channel sits down with Brandon Hegedus — a self-taught cabinet maker from Airdrie, Alberta who has built two scratch-built Ferrari replicas by hand in carbon fibre. The first is a Ferrari Sharknose Formula 1 replica powered by a Suzuki Hayabusa engine. The second is a 1966 Ferrari 206 SP Spyder tribute, hand-formed from carbon fibre panels built in his own garage without factory tooling or engineering support. Brandon walks through the fabrication process, the mold-making logic behind both builds, and what it actually takes to go from a photograph and a roll of carbon to a finished car.
