Almost nobody knows his name. In 1952, a quiet Portuguese-English engineer named John Tojeiro built a car in a small garage. A twin-tube ladder frame, independent suspension, a body inspired by the Ferrari barchetta. That car — LOY 500 — became the AC Ace. The AC Ace became the platform Carroll Shelby turned into the most iconic sports car ever built. Most people know the Cobra. Almost nobody knows Tojeiro. This is the story of what happened when Tojeiro joined the board of a small Essex kit car company called DAX — and what that company built over the next fifty years. A Cobra carrying the original designer's name. A Seven derivative that ran 0-60 in 3.15 seconds and nearly took a Guinness World Record — until the timing equipment failed, then they broke the driveshaft. A mid-engine supercar that Hammond and Clarkson both called one of the best cars they'd ever driven — that sold just 35 units. And two engineers — Gary Sanders and Peter Walker — who spent decades at DAX developing a patented suspension system so advanced it found its own company, its own IP transfer, and its own future.
