Big Bird of Paradise Repot! Strelitzia Nicolai Repotting Video | Tropical Plant Care
It is time for another chaotic repot with Pass That Plant! I have had this plant since 2022, it is now 2026 and I have never repotted or replanted it. If you have been following me for that long you probably remember sweet Marvin in the back of the car with this big beast, of course I had to include a clip! 🌵❤️Copy my houseplant set up: Aroid mix: https://theplantrunner.com/passthatplant US: https://amzn.to/4d9XWz1 AUS: https://amzn.to/3LWOAdN Black boody playsuit: https://www.boody.com.au/JACINTHA Find me 🌵My Links https://passthatplant.com/links-codes/ ❤️Facebook / passthatplant 🌿Instagram / passthatplantau ❤️TikTok / passthatplant 🌿Blog https://passthatplant.com/ Today we move through a few rooms, snip off stems, remove some roots, repot my Bird of Paradise, refresh the potting mix and put it back in the same pot, instead of going up a size. I have done this as I don't want this plant to get any bigger. There is also two dog cameos, four if you include older clips, and a rare husband cameo...well his voice any way. My BOP was sitting quite far forward and leaning heavily, after I repotted her, she is not fanned out beautifully and evenly. It is recommended to repot in spring, and it is winter in Australia, but it is also sunny and 18 today, so we aren't in the freezing temps yet. Birds of Paradise thrive in a well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. The ideal mix consists of about 60–70% moisture-retaining organic matter (like potting soil and compost) and 30–40% drainage materials (like perlite, pumice, or orchid bark) to prevent heavy, waterlogged soil. I use an Aroid mix for mine. Never use heavy, plain garden soil as it packs down tightly and will lead to fatal root rot. Pair your potting mix with a heavy pot, these plants are top heavy and will tip in a light pot. Drainage holes are a must to ensure excess water can easily escape. BOP facts! The Nicolai is the large form of the common 'Bird of Paradise' and will grow to about 6m tall (outdoors), and is very hardy and reasonably drought tolerant. It prefers tropical and subtropical gardens - frost free, full sun to part shade and will grow in tight clumps. You can divide these 'clumps' it is the easiest way to propagate! Pests Bird of Paradise plants are relatively hardy but can fall victim to sap-sucking pests like mealybugs (watch for the colony on my plant), scale, and spider mites. These bugs cause stunted growth, and sticky "honeydew" residue that can lead to black sooty mold. On screen text: Bird of Paradise Repot, Chaotic and Chatty Alfie is ready to run!
