Today, we are going through how to propagate my favourite houseplant, the Begonia maculata 'Wightii', or Polka Dot Begonia. My Begonia is in full bloom, with white flowers and growing better than ever. I just love the delicate roots, they aren’t ready to pot up yet, I will keep them in hydro over winter. The flowering Begonia mother plant is also made entirely out of cuttings, which I potted up two years ago. I am in wonder of how big she has grown. The Water Propagation Method (Step-by-Step) Select a healthy stem with 2 to 3 leaf nodes (the joints where leaves emerge). Using sharp shears, make a clean cut just below a node. Strip away the bottom leaves so that the lower half of the stem is bare. This prevents the leaves from rotting in the water. Place the cutting into a glass or vase of clean water, making sure that at least one bare node is fully submerged. Place the cutting in a spot with bright, indirect light. Top up the water every 7 to 10 days. Once the roots reach about 1 to 2 inches in length (usually in 4-6 weeks), transfer the cutting into a quality potting mix. You can skip the water phase and plant the cut stem directly into moist potting soil. Dipping the cut end in rooting hormone helps, and you'll need to cover the pot with a clear plastic bag to lock in humidity until roots develop. I have tried both Begonia propagation methods, and found that water propagation is much faster and less work. To speed this up even more, you can use clear glass, use a rooting hormone, and/or put the propagations somewhere warmer and sunnier.
