Joachim Raff - Symphony No. 5 "Lenore." London Philharmonic Orchestra. (1973)

Another in our series of No.5 symphonies. Swiss-born Joachim Raff (1822-1862) is now a little known composer, but during his lifetime he and his works were well known and highly regarded. His symphonies were played by major orchestras throughout Europe and America. A prolific composer, he wrote 11 symphonies along with dozens of other works. In the 20th century, his highly romantic compositions fell out of favor and he and his music dropped into relative obscurity. It is a shame his music is not heard more often as he wrote beautiful works, with lush melodies and harmonies that are extremely enjoyable. This symphony was inspired by an 18th century poem of the same name by Gottfried Bürger.
