Collector Holger has achieved what many can only dream of: he lives surrounded by his retro collection. Countless slot machines, jukeboxes, and classic cars have found a home in his incredible house. To make this happen, he spent decades renovating an old, dilapidated farmhouse in the Palatinate region, transforming it into a one-of-a-kind collector’s paradise. Even as a teenager, Holger loved old slot machines, jukeboxes, neon signs, and classic cars. But as his retro collection grew larger and larger, he ran out of space. He found the solution 40 years ago in a dilapidated farmhouse that belonged to a distant relative. He was able to purchase the property at an affordable price and immediately began to make his dream a reality. For the first few years, the old farmhouse and the barn served as storage for his ever-growing collection. It took many years to pay off the farmstead, but Holger remained persistent. After ten years, the time had come: the debts were paid off, and he ventured into the extensive renovation of the barn. As a trained metalworker, Holger wasn’t afraid of a challenge. He tore down almost the entire barn by himself and rebuilt it from the ground up. He enlisted help for the masonry work, but built the roof entirely on his own, without any assistance. Overall, Holger handled the majority of the work—from planning to execution—on his own. And he did it all on a tight budget and with creative solutions: Many building materials were repurposed, as new materials were often too expensive for him. Holger designed every room in the barn according to his own individual vision. He even built an original retro kitchen from the 1950s into his home. It took many years before the barn was finally livable and every piece from his retro collection—from classic cars to slot machines, neon signs, and jukeboxes—had found its place. Today, the renovated farmhouse is not only a home for him and his collection, but also an impressive life’s work of which Holger is truly proud.
