Zauberhafter Natternkopf! Eine Liebeserklärung an die Gattung Echium + Infos zum Naturgarten-Aspekt

The plant genus Echium (viper's bugloss), belonging to the borage family, fascinates plant enthusiasts worldwide. In Central Europe, the common viper's bugloss, botanically known as Echium vulgare, is particularly widespread and represents an ecological enrichment for any natural garden. Its popularity among gardeners stems largely from its robustness and ability to thrive in barren, sunny, gravelly areas. However, its enormous value to wildlife has recently become increasingly important. As a flowering insect pasture that blooms for months, the plant continuously produces nectar throughout the day, making it a magnet for wild bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, while its deep taproots simultaneously make it extremely drought-resistant and easy to care for. : . chrysalis ... Beyond the borders of Central Europe, however, the genus presents a completely different, almost monumental face, as many of its species occur as so-called island endemics on the Macaronesian island groups such as Madeira or the Canary Islands. On La Palma, for example, specialized forms such as the giant viper's bugloss have developed, which, unlike our native, herbaceous species, become woody and reach several meters high into the sky, reflecting their isolated evolution in the local microclimates. The plant owes its striking German name, "Natternkopf" (viper's head), to a fascinating resemblance of its flower structure to a snake's head. A close look at an individual flower reveals that the deeply cleft, two-part style tip protrudes far from the funnel-shaped flower throat like a flickering snake's tongue, while the shape of the buds and the markings on the petals are reminiscent of a viper's head. This visual analogy is also reflected in the scientific name, which derives from the Greek word "echis" for otter or viper and even gave the plant a reputation in the past as a remedy for snakebites.
