But what does that actually mean? That's exactly what I'm talking about in this video. I explain why so many misunderstandings arise around this topic and why the concept is often misunderstood or insufficiently explained. I'll show you why the goal can't be to suddenly transform a high-spirited dog into a cuddly couch potato. Active dogs, such as hunting dogs, herding dogs, or other working breeds, are born with this predisposition. Therefore, *teaching a dog to be calm* doesn't mean changing its personality. Instead, the focus is on teaching the dog clear rules and reliable obedience so that he remains responsive even in exciting situations. I also explain why excessive activity, constant exhaustion, or inappropriate reward patterns often have the opposite effect. Anyone who wants to teach their dog to be calm should understand that calmness doesn't come from exhaustion, but from structured and consistent training. I also address the frequently used term "impulse control" and explain why I'm critical of it. In my view, it's much more about the dog learning to reliably execute commandsβespecially when strong stimuli are present. If you want to know how your dog can learn to be calm without suppressing his natural instincts, you'll find an understandable explanation and practical suggestions in this video. I'll show you why teaching your dog to be calm truly means building meaningful obedience, keeping expectations realistic, and adapting the training step by step to your individual dog.
