I Bonked HARD - 2022 Tour de Big Bear

A couple weeks back my teammates and I went up to Big Bear Lake, CA to tackle the 2022 Tour de Big Bear. This is a Gran Fondo that is has multiple offerings, however, we chose the century ride option with around 8,000 feet of climbing and just over 100 miles. Although this is not a proper bike race I decided I wanted to stay with the lead group for as long as possible before getting shelled so that I could keep up the overall pace and ideally complete this ride faster than any century ride I've done in the past. Of course, with folks like Phil Gaimon and other legit pros on this ride, that was going to be next to impossible. We hung with the lead group for most of the day and the team really did ride this like it was a road race for the most part. My nutrition plan broke down, HARD and I didn't really recover. I didn't follow the on bike nutrition targets I had planned for myself and I paid for it about 70 miles in when I bonked and had no glycogen stores left for my body to run on. I learned some valuable lessons from the 2022 Tour de Big Bear so hopefully you can learn from my mistakes. Let me know what you thought of the video in the comments below! Also, if you're heading out to Big Bear again next year or have any other fondo recommendations for the off season give me a holler I'd love to tackle them and document the experience.
