Austria is building a new, gigantic energy storage facility in the heart of the Tyrolean Alps. The project is called Kühtai 2: a 113-meter-high dam, an artificial lake with 31 million cubic meters of water, and a power plant hidden deep inside a mountain. From the outside, almost all that will be visible is the dam and the new alpine lake. But beneath it lies a complex pumped-storage power plant that can absorb excess electricity and feed it back into the grid when needed. But this project also has a dark side. Kühtai 2 will permanently alter a high alpine valley. Streams, moorlands, and habitats will disappear beneath the new reservoir. This is precisely why the project has been controversial for years. In this video, we'll look at how Kühtai 2 works, why Austria needs such storage facilities, how this 113-meter dam was built, and why the initial impoundment will be the toughest test for the entire project.
