John’s lyrics were inspired by the American railroad imagery he loved at the time, built around the idea of a girlfriend leaving on a train “one after 909.” Although they attempted to record the song properly in March 1963 during the Please Please Me era, they abandoned it after several unsatisfying takes, as heard on Anthology 1. The song resurfaced six years later during the Get Back project, when the band began revisiting older material. On January 28, 1969, the group rehearsed it at Apple Studios, quickly finding a chemistry that had been missing in their earlier attempts. Billy Preston joined in on electric piano, giving the track a livelier, more rhythmic swing that fit perfectly with the project’s back-to-basics spirit. The definitive version of One After 909 was captured live during the rooftop concert. Their rooftop take, played with genuine enthusiasm was chosen for the Let It Be album. I got much luckier with this one than I've Got A Feeling, and didn't have to do any edits for copyright issues! Enjoy! (also... if someone has a 4K rip of Let It Be they'd be willing to share with me (without the stupid Dolby Vision profile imbedded), send me an email!)
