Paul wrote the song in late 1968 in Scotland, drawing from his relationship with the other band members and his general emotional state at the time. Paul wrote the track with Ray Charles in mind, giving it that mellow-jazzy chord structure and vibe. Paul brought it into the Get Back project in January 1969, and early rehearsals show the band working through the song’s slow, lyrical structure together. Recording The Long and Winding Road took place on 26 January 1969 at Apple Studios, with the group laying down the basic track: Paul on piano and vocals, George on acoustic guitar (briefly attempting a harmony part that was later removed from the final mix — possibly John instead), Ringo on drums, John on Bass VI, and Billy Preston on Rhodes with heavy tremolo. The band later re-recorded the track on January 31st on the last day of the Get Back sessions, but the January 26th take remained the band's favorite. Paul discussed orchestrating the track with George Martin earlier, but ultimately chose not to, wanting to keep it minimalist. However, after the main sessions had concluded, Phil Spector added a much lusher orchestral overdub and a swelling choir that gave the track a sweeping, almost “Disney-esque” arrangement, much to Paul's anger. Paul wrote an anger-filled letter to Spector requesting the removal of Spector's overdubs and asking him to bring back the original parts, but Paul's request was never granted until Anthology 3's release, as the Let It Be album and the single were already out. Nevertheless, The Long and Winding Road became a worldwide hit and remains one of the tracks that most clearly echoes the band's last days as a working unit.
