Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the last 18 days in support of the student movement going on at Jantar Mantar in Delhi under the banner of 'Cockroach Janata Party' i.e. CJP. Those involved in the movement claim that due to the continuous fast, he has lost more than 8 kg of weight and his health is deteriorating. However, this is not the first time Sonam Wangchuk has made headlines for a major movement. He has previously fought for a long time on issues related to Ladakh, and a significant chapter of that struggle involved his time in Jodhpur Central Jail, Rajasthan. In September 2025, Sonam Wangchuk led a movement demanding full statehood for Ladakh and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. This movement was led in collaboration with the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. At that time, the administration stated that the movement could have serious implications for law and order and national security. Based on this, he was booked under the National Security Act (NSA), detained, and later sent to Jodhpur Central Jail, Rajasthan. It is reported that Sonam Wangchuk spent approximately 170 days, or nearly six months, in Jodhpur Central Jail. His health deteriorated several times during his time in prison. Wangchuk alleged at the time that he had contracted a serious stomach infection due to contaminated water. According to available information, he underwent 21 medical examinations during this period. In January 2026, his health deteriorated significantly, but despite these circumstances, he continued to study. It is said that he read many books in prison and even began writing a new book. Following a lengthy legal battle and discussions at various levels, the Central Government withdrew the NSA imposed on him with certain conditions. The path for his release was cleared, citing the need for a peaceful resolution and the continuation of dialogue with all parties. After the completion of the necessary legal procedures, he was released from Jodhpur Central Jail. His wife, Geetanjali Angmo, was also present at the time. Now, after his release, Sonam Wangchuk has focused his attention on student issues. He is participating in the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, along with CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, regarding alleged examination irregularities and the future of students. His hunger strike continues. Those associated with the protest say his health is steadily deteriorating. Meanwhile, several opposition leaders have met with him, and several social organizations have expressed support for his movement. Meanwhile, the government is also facing criticism over this issue, despite the government's continued position on the examination system and related matters. The biggest question now is: will this protest lead to any significant decisions on the students' demands? Will a new avenue of dialogue emerge between the government and the protesters?
