Behind the famous Japanese temples that have amazed the world, such as Horyuji Temple and Yakushiji Temple, a national treasure-level craftsman named Ogawa Mitsuo has made great contributions. He decided to become a palace carpenter at the age of 18, and then studied under Nishioka Tsunekazu. It has been more than 50 years since then, and he has worked on more than 100 wooden structures. In his opinion, traditions are not to be maintained. As long as you work hard to build things that will not embarrass you, traditions will naturally form. As a pupil of Nishioka Tsunekazu, the master carpenter of Horyuji, Ogawa Mitsuo studied the ancient traditions of temple construction. He continued the ancient practices of construction and restoration used for historical temple buildings and contributed to preserving the oldest existing wooden structures in Japan.
