A Channel Exploring Japanese and Asian Culture — “Culture Department Store” by Seitaro Yamazaki The theme for this time is "Ink." To learn about the ink used in art, including by Yamazaki, we head to Nara, where over 90% of solid ink is produced. We visit Kokubaien, Japan's oldest ink-making company, and observe the traditional process of making oil soot ink. We explore the mystical smoke collection process and the drying technique that uses ash replenished only once every several decades, experiencing ink-making techniques passed down for about 450 years.
