1 Samuel 16:1-18 O homem vê o que está diante dos olhos, porém o Senhor olha para o coração.

1 Samuel 16:1-18 Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. (Come and Follow Me 06/14/2026) • God sends Samuel to anoint a new king (1 Samuel 16:1–5) 1 Samuel 16:1 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.” 2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.” 4 So Samuel did what the Lord had said, and went to Bethlehem. Then the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, “Do you come in peace?” 5 He said, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. • “How long will you grieve over Saul…?” Samuel was still lamenting Saul’s downfall. God was not being insensitive, but showing that the time had come to move on. • Saul’s failure did not take God by surprise. The Lord had already prepared the next step: a new king. Lesson: Human errors do not frustrate God’s purposes. He continues to guide history. • D&C 3:1 The works, designs, and purposes of God cannot be frustrated or destroyed. 2 For God does not walk in crooked paths, nor does he turn to the right or to the left, nor does he deviate from what he has said; therefore, his paths are straight and his way is an eternal circle. • God chooses David (1 Samuel 16:6–13) 1 Samuel 16:6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that Eliab saw him, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before him. 7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not at his appearance, or at his height; for I have rejected him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh at the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh at the heart. 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel: and Samuel said, The Lord hath not chosen this one either. 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by: and he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this one. 10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel: But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 Samuel said to Jesse, “Are these all the young men?” Jesse replied, “There remains yet the youngest, and he is tending the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” 12 So he sent for him (he was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features). Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah. • When Samuel saw Eliab, Jesse’s oldest son, he was impressed by his appearance and stature, thinking that he was certainly the chosen one. But God corrected him: "Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (v. 7) • A heart aligned with God is worth more than impressive talents without character. • The Spirit leaves Saul and he is tormented (1 Samuel 16:14–18) 1 Samuel 16:14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him. 15 Saul’s servants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Now let our lord command his servants who are here to find someone who can play the harp. When the evil spirit from God comes on you, he will play it, and you will feel better.” 17 Saul said to his servants, “Find me someone who plays well and bring him to me.” 18 Then one of the young men answered and said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a valiant man, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.” • The Spirit of the Lord empowers David, while Saul loses divine favor due to his disobedience. • David enters Saul's service (1 Samuel 16:19–23) 1 Samuel 16:19 And Saul sent messengers to Jesse, saying, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.” 20 So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them to Saul by the hand of David his son. 21 So David went to Saul and stood before him; and Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. 22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse: “Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my eyes.” 23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand; then Saul would feel relief, and be well, and the evil spirit would leave him.
