Seasonal rains have brought abundance to the agricultural sector. According to the analysis of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, May rainfall reached its highest level in the last 33 years. If current meteorological conditions continue, yields and production quantities of cereals and other agricultural products are expected to be at or above the long-term averages across the country. Rainfall has benefited agriculture; a "spring atmosphere" prevails in production and yield. While rainfall across Turkey has reached its highest level in recent years, if favorable weather conditions continue, yields and production quantities of cereals and other agricultural products are expected to be around or above the long-term averages. According to climate and irrigation monitoring statistics for May prepared by the General Directorate of Agricultural Reform of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, an average of 95.6 millimeters of rainfall was recorded across Turkey in May. The average May rainfall is 52.7 millimeters, and last year's May rainfall was 48.2 millimeters. Thus, rainfall last month increased by 81 percent compared to the average and by 98 percent compared to May of last year. Rainfall across Turkey in May reached its highest level in the last 33 years. Water year rainfall at its highest level in the last 66 years. Rainfall during the 8-month period of the "2026 water year," covering October 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, exceeded both the normal average and last year's figures. Rainfall was 34% above the normal average and 75% above last year's figures. The highest rainfall level in the last 66 years was recorded for this 8-month period. According to assessments, meteorological and agricultural conditions across Turkey followed a positive and balanced course in May. With the significant increase in rainfall, irrigation dam occupancy rates reached 79.5%, presenting a much stronger picture in terms of water resources compared to last year. Positive picture in production in all regions. When the effects of rainfall are examined by region, in the Marmara Region, rainfall during the heading, milk ripening, and maturing stages of cereal crops was around or above seasonal norms. Therefore, there is no risk of agricultural drought. In the Aegean Region, cereal crops are in the stages of stem elongation, heading, milk ripening, maturation, and the start of harvest. Agricultural production shows a positive outlook, and with sufficient rainfall, crop development, especially for cereals, sunflowers, and cotton, is proceeding normally, with no risk of drought. The Mediterranean Region also generally shows no risk of drought. Crop development and agricultural activities are progressing as expected. In some areas, excessive rainfall has caused root rot, rust disease, yellowing, developmental problems, and flooding. In the Central Anatolia Region, sufficient rainfall has largely eliminated the risk of drought. Crop development is generally positive. Local risks of hail, floods, and diseases are being monitored. In the Black Sea Region, corn fields are mostly in the 4-6 leaf stage, while hazelnuts are in the husk and fruit setting stage. Harvesting has begun in tea production areas, while development is normal in kiwi and other fruit types. The overall outlook for the region appears positive in terms of yield and production. In the Eastern Anatolia Region, thanks to rainfall, there is no widespread risk of drought. The main threat to production across the region is assessed to be yield losses due to disease and excessive humidity. In the Southeastern Anatolia Region, fungal diseases, root rot, rust diseases, and localized hail damage, particularly those caused by excessive rainfall, stand out as the main risks that could lead to yield losses in some areas. High Expectations for Yield and Production When considering Turkey as a whole, rainfall, according to water year data, has been significantly above both normal and last year's levels, reaching the highest levels in recent years. This has resulted in a humid and productive period. The increase in rainfall observed in all basins has created a positive picture in terms of water reserves. While cereal development is generally progressing normally and healthily in all regions, if current meteorological conditions continue, it is expected that yields and production quantities for cereals and other agricultural products will be around or above the long-term averages nationwide. As of May, a positive, balanced, and high-yield potential period is being experienced in terms of agricultural production across the country. While there is no risk of drought, localized risks due to excess water continue in some areas.
