Twenty years after the attacks that shook Madrid on March 11, 2004, leaving 192 dead and nearly 1,900 wounded, only three of those convicted for the attacks remain in prison. They are José Emilio Suárez Trashorras, Jamal Zougam, and Otman el Gnaoui, the three who received the harshest sentences and will remain behind bars until 2044, when they will have served 40 years, the maximum term allowed under Spanish law. The trial against the perpetrators of the massacre was held three years after the attacks, between February 15 and July 2, 2007. Twenty-nine defendants stood trial, of whom 21 were initially convicted by the National Court. However, a year later, the Supreme Court upheld the prison sentences for 17, acquitted four, and convicted one who had previously been released, Antonio Toro from Asturias.
