Semper now provides electric as well as acoustic recording options. Musician’s Note: This recording of “The Jackass Blues” was made to sound like a 1926 African-American territory band from Ohio, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia. I’m not trying to sound like any particular band or artist, just going for a regional sound. I recorded this digitally using garage band and then played it through a preamplifier into my lathe. Rather than alto and tenor or alto and c-melody, I opted for two altos as in some smaller scenes it may have been hard to find all musicians necessary to fit a standard 10 or 11 piece dance band. Engineer’s Note: These are test recordings made on in the early days of operating this lathe. As such, the sound may be crude and unbalanced. That said, I am pretty happy with how this is sounding already. I have been experimenting with different cutting styli and this one really gets a nice groove noise to cut ratio. I’ve still got a long way to go but this recording has both greater clarity and greater volume compared to my previous experiments. But it will continue to improve.
