EFREMOV Efremov is a city (since 1777) in the Tula Oblast of Russia. It is the administrative center of the Yefremovsky District (since 1924) and the corresponding municipality of Yefremov, with the status of an urban district (since 2014). From 1727 to 1924, it was the district center of the Yefremovsky District of the Tula Governorate, and from 1951 to 2006, it was a city under regional subordination. It is a major center of economics, industry, transportation, culture, history, and tourism in the Tula Oblast. It has the status of a single-industry town in the Russian Federation. Founded in 1637 as a fortress, the name was given based on the calendar personal name Efrem. Under Peter the Great, all service people who inhabited the city, who were not nobles, were reclassified as state peasants. The lands they owned were gradually transferred to landowners, who settled them with serfs. During the preparations for the Azov campaigns, supply trains carrying ammunition and weapons for the flotilla being built in Voronezh passed through Yefremov on their way south. Tsar Peter I himself passed through the city with his companions, the first head of state to visit Yefremov. The city is located on the Krasivaya Mecha River (a tributary of the Don), 318 km south of Moscow and 144 km from Tula on the Moscow-Donbass railway (Yefremov station on the Moscow Railway). ZADONSK Zadonsk is a city (since 1779) in Russia, the administrative center of the Zadonsky District of the Lipetsk Region. It forms the municipality of Zadonsk, with the status of an urban settlement as the only populated area within it. Area: 1,258 hectares. Population: ↗ 9,887 (2021). Until 1779, the settlement of Teshevka was located on the site of Zadonsk. It originated as the settlement of Teshevka, adjacent to the Teshevsky (later Zadonsky) Mother of God Monastery, founded around 1600. It was first mentioned in the payment books of the Zasosensky Stan of the Yelets District in 7123 (1615): "Behind the monastery, under the Teshevsky forest, the settlement of Teshevskaya on the Teshevka River at the top." The monastery was founded by monks Kirill and Gerasim, natives of Moscow's Sretensky Monastery, who brought here a copy of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, later renowned as miraculous. In 1769, Bishop Tikhon of Voronezh (Timofey Savelyevich Sokolovsky), a renowned hierarch and spiritual writer who had retired due to ill health, settled in the monastery. His major spiritual works, "True Christianity," "Cell Letters," "Spiritual Treasure Collected from the World," and others, were written in Zadonsk. In 1861, Tikhon of Zadonsk was canonized. On September 25, 1779, during the formation of the Voronezh Viceroyalty, the Teshevka settlement was transformed into the district town of Zadonsk, due to its location (relative to the Russian capital, St. Petersburg) beyond the Don River. The original name of the town, according to imperial decree, was Zadonskoy; it was later transformed into the shorter Zadonsk. On September 21, 1781, in accordance with the imperially approved Senate report "On the Approval of Coats of Arms of the Cities of the Voronezh Viceroyalty," Zadonsk was granted a coat of arms. It was "a tower built beyond the Don River on a silver field, signifying the true location of this city." On March 19, 1782, the general development plan for Zadonsk was approved by the emperor, according to which the city's architectural appearance was subsequently shaped. A regional special economic zone for tourism and recreation, "Zadonshchina," is planned for Zadonsk. The concept was developed by the Voronezhproekt Institute, commissioned by the Lipetsk Region Administration. According to the project, the city will include cultural and entertainment centers, multifunctional administrative buildings, hotel complexes, sports facilities, and residential areas. In addition, ski and rollerblading trails, horseback riding routes, and hiking trails for pilgrims are planned. The M4 "Don" federal highway runs close to Zadonsk. The city is connected by bus service to villages in the Zadonsky District and the regional capital, Lipetsk. Transit buses to Voronezh, Moscow, Tula, Oryol, Kaluga, Yelets, Novomoskovsk, and Yefremov also pass through the Zadonsk bus station. On May 22, 2013, at 2:30 PM, a hurricane accompanied by a tornado hit the city, damaging more than 200 homes. The Yefremov Thermal Power Plant has been in operation since 1933, supplying industrial enterprises with electricity and the city with heat. Yefremov is a single-industry industrial city, the backbone of its economy being three chemical plants.
