"Director Hachiro TV" is a channel supporting childcare workers. 📣 We carefully explain childcare questions, concerns, and worries. A channel supporting childcare workers, delivering videos that will take you one step further in your childcare career. 2022 "Hachiro Play Shop" This is Director Hachiro TV, supporting childcare workers. This episode's theme is "Childcare Worker Common Facts." Apparently, viewers of Director Hachiro TV are called "Hachilers," and today I'll be answering comments from these Hachilers. "I'm in charge of the one-year-old class, and my child is expressing his feelings and asserting himself, and there are times when he bites and scratches a lot, which is troubling me. I'd like to learn how to stop him and how to allocate staff appropriately," I said. Thank you for your comment. Scratching and biting are issues that all daycare centers struggle with. Momo-sensei's top priority is creating an environment and interactions that fulfill each child's needs. Rather than trying to eliminate negative behaviors, she says, fulfilling children's needs through play and other activities naturally leads to development. We also discussed the practices we use at daycare centers. Children in the one-year-old class tend to have a wider range of movement and more active exploration than infants. The environment must be designed to fulfill these needs. We also discussed functional toys, toys that allow for fine play, areas with various materials for silent play, such as building blocks and Tupperware, and diagonal areas for playtime with two or three children, such as house cooking. We also discussed the placement of childcare workers. The basic rule is for childcare workers to be positioned diagonally across from each other, making it easy to notice not only children's signs but also those of other adults. She also mentioned that it's good to determine teacher roles in advance. This could include someone to clean up toys and someone to listen to children's feelings. Each daycare center can come up with various ideas through discussion. When a problem arises, we tend to think of clever ways to stop it, but it's important to talk about the underlying issues and background and decide on a course of action. If you go through these steps, you'll feel more at ease even if your child suddenly expresses their opinions. However, when they actually start biting or scratching, you can't just stand by and watch, so in those cases, it's a good idea to create a personal space just for that child and help them calm down little by little. Director Hachiro says that making adjustments just for that child will improve the balance of the entire class. We tend to attribute behavior that seems negative to adults, but this is actually counterproductive. Interacting with a caring attitude may work better. We'll also be planning to include comments, so please feel free to write in! See you in the next video!
