Using Isometrics to Overcome Plateaus | Advanced Training Series
In today’s video Coach Alan Bishop (@coachalanbishop) takes us through a few different isometric training protocols. With an isometric contraction, you are producing force but the muscle length and joint angle stay the same. Isometric training is often overlooked in many programs because isometrics alone aren’t great for hypertrophy. Although this may be the case, adding them to your routine can pay off huge if you take a look at the entire picture. Most people are about 10-15% stronger during a maximal isometric contraction compared to a maximal concentric contraction. This greater force production causes the recruitment of more high threshold motor units. These powerful fibers have the greatest potential for growth and strength gains. So by training your nervous system's capacity to recruit more high threshold motor units through isometrics, you are accelerating your potential for muscle growth and greater strength gains.
