Reforma del transporte metropolitano sin túnel en 18 de Julio: ¿Cuáles son los principales cambios?

Every day, approximately 70,000 people travel from the department of Canelones to Montevideo for work. Therefore, the Canelones authorities are seeking to reduce travel times and encourage the use of public transportation, which are the main objectives of the metropolitan transportation system reform being promoted by the national government. Yesterday, a key meeting took place at the Executive Tower between President Yamandú Orsi, the Minister of Transportation, and the mayors of Canelones, Montevideo, and San José. The main points were agreed upon: electric BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) buses, articulated and with a capacity of 220 passengers, will be used on dedicated lanes along the three initial corridors: Avenida 18 de Julio, Avenida 8 de Octubre - Camino Maldonado - Ruta 8, and Avenida Italia - Giannattasio, with an underground interchange in the Tres Cruces area. However, one point of contention remained: the possibility of a tunnel for the buses under Avenida 18 de Julio. The decision was postponed because the mayor of Montevideo, Mario Bergara, advocated for avoiding the underground section of the railway and prioritizing surface traffic. To support his proposal, he presented new studies and data. What was that meeting like? When will the project be finalized?
