Elevador da Bica Tram Riding Lisbon Walking Tour Take one of Lisbon's most iconic tram rides, which ascends a steep slope with the Tagus in the background for a few hundred inspirational and picturesque meters. The Elevador da Bica, or Ascensor da Bica, is a funicular located on Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, in Bica, Lisbon. It is owned by Companhia de Carris de Ferro de Lisboa, and establishes the connection between Rua de São Paulo and Largo do Calhariz, facing one of the steepest slopes in the city. It opened on June 28, 1892. It has the capacity to carry 23 passengers, of which 9 are seated and 14 are standing. The route is 283 m , on a double rail track built into the common street pavement. It was initially moved by the water counterweight system. In 1896 it started to move by steam and, later, in 1914 , it was electrified. That same year It suffered an accident and was stopped for nine years. With more than a century of existence, it is the most typical lift in the city of Lisbon and, although it does not have the same affluence as the Elevador da Glória , it is nowadays one of the main tourist attractions in the Portuguese capital. Due to its enormous historical and cultural importance, the elevator was classified as a National Monument in February 2002. Take the Elevador da Bica if you want to have a one-of-a-kind experience in Lisbon. Due to the stark contrast between the steep road and the river in the background, this is one of Lisbon's most photographed funiculars. It joins Largo do Calhariz and Rua de So Paulo in a thrilling descent that can be done on foot, but an ascent that is only for the brave. The tram, which has been decorated by artists and is a witness to the colorful nightlife in Rua da Bica, appears to share the enthusiasm of the city during the Festas Populares.
