I Borbone — La dinastia che sopravvisse alla ghigliottina e regna ancora oggi | Documentario
The Bourbons: Nine Centuries of Power, Europe's Tenacious Dynasty Eleven sovereigns on the throne of France, five on that of Spain, and still others in Naples, Sicily, Parma, and Luxembourg. The Habsburgs died out, the Romanovs were swept away by the revolution, and the Valois family left the throne without heirs. The Bourbons, however, still reign today. In this documentary, we retrace the entire arc of a house that endured the Middle Ages, absolutism, the guillotine, and two restorations without ever truly disappearing. The story begins with its feudal origins in the heart of western France, when the lords of Bourbon were merely loyal vassals of the crown, and follows their rise step by step: the betrayal of Constable Charles of Bourbon and his death under the walls of Rome, the long religious civil war, the rise of Henry of Navarre and his subsequent conversions, and the silent reign of Louis XIII in the shadow of Richelieu. At the heart of the narrative is the century of Louis XIV: his fifty-four-year personal rule, the work of Colbert, the construction of Versailles and the economies hidden behind its gilding, the system of favorites as a court institution, the constant wars, the Great Winter, and the War of the Spanish Succession. Then came the decline: Louis XV and the season of disinterest, Louis XVI, a sober and industrious ruler whom his own subjects failed to recognize, the convocation of the Estates General, the revolution, and the scaffold. The episode concludes with the contemporary era: the Restoration and the Constitutional Charter, the July Revolution, the Orléans branch, and finally the Bourbons of today, in Spain and Luxembourg, with a look at the profound reasons for a survival that no other great European dynasty has managed to achieve. A documented historical account, designed for those who enjoy delving into the past without simplifications. Where sources diverge, the different interpretations are presented honestly, without choosing a single version.
