Since the outbreak in Wuhan, myths and mysteries have surrounded the origin of the virus. The so-called lab leak theory persists, especially in the USA. But how much conspiracy is behind it? And how much truth? To this day, it remains unclear what the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is. The zoonosis theory is considered very likely. It suggests that the virus jumped from animals to humans. The Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan is the focus of attention, as studies suggest the first cases of coronavirus originated there. However, a host or vector animal has not yet been found. This leaves plenty of room for speculation and conspiracy theories. The lab leak theory, internationally known as the "lab leak theory," is the most persistent. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the "lab leak theory" has circulated in various forms: For example, some claim that the natural virus accidentally "escaped" from a laboratory during an experiment, and that the Chinese government deliberately covered up the incident. Others say the virus was altered by scientists in a lab and—intentionally or unintentionally—entered the public sphere. The question of the virus's origin has been a politically charged issue from the outset, fueled by geopolitical tensions between China and the USA. Donald Trump, in particular, was a driving force behind the "lab leak theory" in 2020. He openly speculated about the virus's origin, deliberately stoking anti-Asian sentiment. In mid-2021, Trump's successor, Joe Biden, announced that American security agencies would re-investigate the virus's origin, thus giving the lab leak theory renewed traction.
