Organs are a lucrative but illegal business that has deeply penetrated the black market. The largest recipient country: the USA. South and Central American migrants who own nothing but their bodies are easy prey for Mexican organ traffickers. The gangs pay donors $5,000 for a kidney – a sum that compels many migrants to risk their health or even their lives. The transplants are performed under highly questionable hygienic conditions. The organ trade is also flourishing in China: A former surgeon reports on the inhumane practices that are not only tolerated but encouraged by the government. However, the international prosecution and punishment of these crimes proves difficult. Our documentary delves into the dark world of illegal organ trafficking and speaks with victims, perpetrators, and investigators who are fighting against the machinations of these criminal gangs.
