While Ed Marlo and Max Maven both created versions of an Ace assembly performed in reverse, Don England and David Solomon were the first to develop the instantaneous “kickback.” Both magicians arrived at the idea independently around the same time in the late 1970s. I came up with my first version after seeing Don England perform his in 1978, and I later passed it on to Paul Harris for publication. That version became very popular, and J.C. Wagner, Jon Racherbaumer, David Neighbors, and Jim Patton each developed strong variations—primarily focusing on how the final card is handled.
