It's based on a Jack Avis plot from 1958, which was incorrectly attributed to Hofzinser but has been known as the Hofzinser Ace Problem for the past five decades. Back in 2019, Aimar Garcia lectured for our Wednesday Night Magic Club and performed a single-phase, gaffed version of the Hofzinser Ace Problem with a kicker ending.
