Visiting Europe's largest slum in gritty Kosice, Slovakia (This is not the Europe you imagined) 🇸🇰

My first stop on my travels through central and eastern Slovakia brought me to the small city of Košice - the country's second largest, just a stone's throw from the Ukrainian and Hungarian borders. This gritty, edgy city is not for the faint of heart. Despite its massive social problems involving the country's discriminated Roma (aka. "Gypsy") population, its countless (and sometimes aggressive) panhandlers and vagrants, and its graffiti-lined streets, this city does exude a certain charm if you examine it closely. Slovakia's second city boasts some of the finest Gothic churches in Europe (eg. the impressive St. Elizabeth's Cathedral), splendid green squares and languid fountains, and plenty of local microbreweries and pivotecas (beer bars). Though, just a few kilometers to the west, you'll find Europe's largest and most notorious slum - Lunik IX - with its massive heaps of garbage and people living in dereliction that you never thought existed in Europe. This is a city of contrasts - a beautiful place that just can't hide its flaws, yet manages to charm you nonetheless.
