The Land of 100 Castles! Exploring the hilltop ruins of Spis Castle (Rural Slovakia is amazing) 🇸🇰

After leaving Košice, I headed northwest to the small town of Spišské Podhradie, the launching point for my hike to Spis Castle, located a couple kilometres east of the village. The 12th century Spis Castle stands high above a hilltop overlooking Spišské Podhradie (about an hour hike straight uphill from the village). Though it lies mostly in ruin, the castle is an astonishing relic of Medieval history, and one of Slovakia's most stunning historic castles. I enjoyed my exploration of its interior - through the historic chapel, recreated living quarters, into torture chambers, and past museum relics, all the while enjoying amazing views of the Slovakian countryside on all sides. Spis Castle is definitely one of the highlights of Slovakia, and a must-do on your visit to the High Tatras region or nearby Košice.
