Pakistani Girls Take Boxing to KO Gender Inequality
Girls from a female boxing club in Pakistan are trying to realize their dreams with intense boxing practicing, regardless of the society's traditional intolerance to women participating in sports. According to the Global Gender Gap Report released by the World Economy Forum, Pakistan ranks the 141st, second to last, in terms of gender equality worldwide, where women have suffered from long-time low rate of education and employment. The Pak Shaheen Boxing Club, located at the Lyari Town of Karachi, is the only one boxing club for women in Pakistan, and has 14 members getting trained. Although the club is of substandard environment and limited infrastructure, the girls have all worked very hard. "Girls are more concentrated than boys as for the training. They work so hard here and also practice a lot back home so they all have achieved fast progress. The girls always come here on time and never miss any class so I believe they will achieve excellent results," said Younis Qambrani, the coach of the club. The Shaheen club was first founded in 1992 and started the women's boxing class in 2015. Girls take training for at least two hours a day and six days every week. In order to attract more girls to take part in the sport, the club is free to all the females. Among the 14, the eldest girls is 17 years old while the youngest only eight, "I love boxing. I have two uncles who are all national-class and world-class boxers. I wish I could be like them and reach the world level so I can make my country, my family, my coach and the Lyari Town feel proud," said a little boxer. Actually it's not easy to find girls who are willing to talk to the media in front of the camera, as they have suffered from obstructions from their families and even threatening from strangers due to the society's discrimination against female. However they said they will stick to their love for boxing as well as the courage to fight against the gender inequality. More on: http://newscontent.cctv.com/NewJsp/ne...
