What was the role of the Prix de Rome? How was it organized, who awarded it, and what were the criteria for competing for its award? This paper seeks to demonstrate how prizes and emoluments, awarded by academic juries, influenced official taste and, in part, the visibility and thus the careers of Parisian artists in the late nineteenth century.
