Nineteen-year-old North Korean high school graduates Lee Sang-jong, Lee Jang-jik, and Choi Dong-jun, all fresh out of high school, begin their studies in Bulgaria with high hopes of becoming great industrial leaders for their country. Choi Dong-sung, who arrived a year before them, is shocked by the collapse of the seemingly perfect Stalinist regime and Khrushchev's declaration that existing communist ideology was flawed. He becomes deeply troubled by communism. The students are also disillusioned with Kim Il-sung's regime, which is spiraling toward dictatorship. In 1962, as the situation in Eastern Europe deteriorates, Kim Il-sung recalls the students to North Korea. However, the four refuse to return, distributing a declaration of exile to North Korea and other communist countries, denouncing the North Korean dictatorship. When Kim Il-sung's order to capture them was issued, the North Korean embassy brutally beat and arrested them in the city, detaining them for over a month. They narrowly escaped with the support of the Bulgarian and Soviet governments, but this incident led to the complete cessation of diplomatic relations between North Korea and Bulgaria. From then on, they lived in seclusion in the provincial city of Stara Zagora, evading relentless North Korean surveillance, for the next 30 years. In 1989, with the collapse of communism and the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and South Korea, their lives took a complete turn. They served as a bridge between South Korea and Bulgaria, traveling back and forth between the two countries to become missionaries for unification.
