How Atoms Move - Chemical Dynamics Theory
Professor Abraham Nitzan (Tel Aviv University and the University of Pennsylvania) and Professor Uri Peskin (Technion), in conversation with Professor Barak Hirshberg (Tel Aviv University). In this episode, we dive into the fascinating world of chemical dynamics theory—the study of how atoms and molecules move. It is a journey in which the laws of physics meet the complexity of chemistry, spanning topics from understanding reaction rates to the frontiers of molecular electronics, quantum mechanics, and polariton chemistry. Professor Abraham Nitzan is one of the founders of the field of chemical dynamics, a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, a recipient of the Israel Prize and the EMET Prize, and an International Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Professor Uri Peskin of the Technion is a world-renowned expert in quantum mechanics in nanoscience and engineering, and the author of the book "Quantum Mechanics in Nanoscience & Engineering." Theoretical research on the dynamics of chemical processes explores the real-time, step-by-step pathways that electrons and atoms take during a chemical reaction, understanding not just what a reaction produces, but exactly how and how fast it happens. Such understanding is important for designing more efficient catalysts, renewable energy technologies, and advanced molecular devices. We spoke with Professors Nitzan and Peskin about the fundamental questions of the field: Is there a "unified theory" of chemical dynamics? How does one choose the appropriate theoretical tools for tackling complex systems? And what does the future hold for research in this area—from the integration of artificial intelligence to the possibility of future scientific revolutions? Listen to this episode, which explores the very heart of physical chemistry, hosted by Professor Barak Hirshberg.
