AltmühltalRadweg 2▶ Altmühlsee - Herrieden - Treuchtlingen - Pappenheim [ Radtouren Radreise ]

In the second part of our cycle tour on the AltmühltalRadweg we continue through the upper Altmühltal. We are impressed by the small and beautiful places with their medieval buildings; like Herrieden, Ornbau, Gunzenhausen, Treuchtlingen and Pappenheim, just to name a few. There is a cooling between Ornbau and Gunzenhausen on Altmühlsee. It was specially designed as a water reservoir for the Main-Danube Canal, which is increasingly becoming a pleasant leisure paradise and recreational destination. Another highlight on this stage is Graben. Here was born the idea of ​​the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal, as Charlemagne pursued the plan to establish a binding connection between the North Sea and the Black Sea. Treuchtlingen was strongly influenced by the railway. Here, the railway lines to Nuremberg, Munich, Augsburg and Würzburg intersect. The express locomotive 01 220 commemorates the time of the steam locomotives and the importance of treat amounts as a railway junction. At Treuchtlingen, the transition between the Central Franconian basin and the southern Frankenalb is clearly visible. This landscape boundary is called the "Treuchtlinger Gates". It forms the conclusion of the upper Altmühltal. In Pappenheim, the cycle path leads directly past the eponymous campsite Pappenheim. Many thanks to our interviewees Susanne and Manfred.
