"One of these is not like the others." Football is not football. A bonnet is not a bonnet. A boot may not be a boot. A trunk is not a trunk. What a Canadian means by these words and what a Briton means by these terms are very different things. Unless we know the setting of the conversation, things will be very onfusing. In the same way, being a member is not the same as being a member. There is a difference.
