Background: King Janaka of Mithila organized a grand Brahmayajna (gathering of scholars). In this gathering, Maharishi Yajnavalkya was considered the best due to his immense knowledge. None of the other sages present in the gathering was able to challenge his wisdom. 2. Questions by Gargi: The learned Gargi (daughter of Maharishi Vachaknavi) asked Yajnavalkya profound philosophical questions to test his arrogance and knowledge. The main topics of their dialogue were: • The basis of creation: Gargi asked what basic element woven (or bound) water, earth, sky, space, heaven, and all the worlds? • Yajnavalkya replied that the entire universe is permeated with space. When Gargi asked about the basis of space, he explained that it is all based on Akshar Brahma (God). 3. Discussion of the Absolute Truth: In her second round of questions, Gargi asked, "What is the true basis of the element that exists below the earth, above the heavens, and between them, and which also exists in the past, present, and future?" 4. Yajnavalkya's final answer: Yajnavalkya explained Akshar Brahma (the formless God) to Gargi and said: • "This Absolute Truth has not been seen by anyone, but it itself sees everything. It is unheard, yet hears everyone. It is unknown, yet knows everything." • This entity is so subtle that without it, no function of the universe, the movement of the sun and moon, or the cycle of seasons, is possible. 5. Conclusion of the Dialogue: Gargi was satisfied with Yajnavalkya's non-dual and cosmic knowledge. She acknowledged Yajnavalkya's superiority in the assembly. She told all the sages present that no one could defeat this Brahmajnani.
