The Mafia and the Priests (Mafia e Parrini) - Amanda Pascali

I was sitting in his kitchen on a hot day in May, with a cup of coffee and a bowl of gelato. Outside the window, on one side: the sea, and on the other, the mountains of Sferracavallo. Surrounded by vinyl records, paintings, and photographs of Rosa Balistreri, I was meeting Felice Liotti for the first time. It was he who recorded her singing this song on New Year's Eve of 1987. The iconic Rosa Balistreri sang this song, written by poet Ignazio Buttitta, calling out the connection between the mafia and many priests. That was not a normal thing to do and certainly not normal for a woman. She was one of the first Italian women to speak out against social injustice and her performance of this song is a testament to her courageous and rebellious legacy. She said what men were afraid of saying. Rosa walked so female activist musicians everywhere today could run. #folkcreative #translations #musiclife #italianfashion #sicilian #history #60sfashion #70s #70smusic #70sstyle #vintage #singersongwriters #womeninmusic
