The Sun (Lu Suli) - Sicilian Work Song in English
The Sun is my reimagining of an old Sicilian work song, translated into English and arranged in a bluegrass/roots style. Drawing on the rich oral tradition of Sicilian folk music, this reinterpretation merges cultural storytelling with the rhythmic drive and harmonic depth characteristic of bluegrass and African American spirituals. This song has been performed in various forms and arrangements by artists throughout Sicily, including the famous Rosa Balistreri: one of the first Italian women to publicly denounce social inequality through music. My arrangement features three-part harmony, honoring the communal spirit of both Sicilian and Appalachian music traditions. While the original Sicilian work song encapsulates the struggles and joys of laborers through its poignant melody and lyrics, this version seeks to bridge cultural and musical worlds, offering a fresh perspective on a timeless piece.
