A Philadelphia Railfanning Potpourri, 1954-1973
WJC Vice President Fred Ciocciola shows the best shots from his decades of watching trains and trolleys in the Philly area. This video starts in the mid-1950s, when trolleys were still ubiquitous, SEPTA didn’t exist, cars had tail fins, and the Pennsylvania Railroad was standing tall. By the end of the video, SEPTA operated those trolleys that still existed, and the Pennsylvania had morphed into a bankrupt and struggling Penn Central. This presentation was recorded live at the May 18, 2026 meeting of the West Jersey Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society held in Audubon, New Jersey and virtually.
