Our drive from Punda Maria Rest Camp to Shingwedzi Rest Camp was amazing - and stopping at the Babalala Picnic Site is one of those moments that makes a Kruger trip unforgettable. Babalala Picnic Site is one of those quiet, underrated stops that really captures the heart of the northern Kruger. Babalala is a small, rustic picnic site in the far northern region of the park, near the border of Limpopo Province and close to the Pafuri area. Like many of Kruger’s older picnic spots, it was established as a simple rest point for travelers exploring these more remote routes - long before tourism infrastructure became more developed. The northern Kruger has always been known for its wild, less crowded feel, and Babalala reflects that perfectly. It hasn’t been overdeveloped, which means it still offers that authentic bush experience - quiet, raw, and deeply peaceful. Why it’s so special: It’s a smaller, less busy stop, ideal if you enjoy a more private bush break. Surrounded by Mopane veld, it attracts animals like elephants, zebra, and various antelope, especially in the quieter hours. Simple facilities - benches, shade, and basic amenities - keep the focus on nature rather than crowds.
