Islam as an Ummatic Dīn – Dr. Sohail Hanif | Ummatics Conference 2024

“There's never a bad time, there's never a bad place, there's only opportunity.” – Dr. Sohail Hanif In his talk, titled “Islam as an Ummatic Dīn,” Dr. Sohail Hanif argues that a survey of the fiqh tradition shows that Islam is inherently a communal way of life with sociopolitical objectives in all its elements. He thematically draws upon the endeavour for Madinah as evidence of the communal responsibility to uphold Islamic institutions even in the absence of a traditional Muslim government, and that it is our duty to work towards the ideal even with the bare tools and the capabilities that we have now. Dr. Hanif is the National Zakat Foundation’s Chief Executive. Prior to this, he held the position of Lecturer at Cambridge Muslim College and the Head of Sciences at Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman. He has expertise in Islamic law, having studied extensively with traditional scholars, and holds a PhD from Oxford University. This talk is part of Ummatics Institute’s 2nd annual conference - titled "Towards an Ummatic Future" – which took place at ISTAC (International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This conference seeks to explore the “what”, “why”, and “how” of the Ummatics Institute in the context of imagining an ummatic future, understanding the importance of working for it, and thinking about how such work might proceed.
