Eating Like It’s 1915 for a Day
In today’s episode of Cooking Through Hard Times in History, I’m cooking a full day of low-cost meals from 1915, using a historical “bill of fare” designed to stretch simple ingredients as far as possible. These meals were created during a time when food was scarce, money was tight, and nothing went to waste. This menu relies heavily on rice, prepared in three different ways — a common practice in frugal historical kitchens. I use a traditional cooking method that allows the rice water to be saved and reused for soup, showing how every ingredient had value. 🍽️ Today’s Historical Menu (1915) Breakfast • Hominy mush with brown sugar syrup • Toast • Coffee for adults, milk for children Midday Dinner • Rice soup made with reserved rice water • Croutons • Rice & cornmeal muffins Supper • Scalloped fish and rice • Boiled beets • Hot gingerbread • Coffee for adults, milk for children These meals may seem simple, but they are deeply nourishing, practical, and surprisingly comforting — and they reflect lessons we can still use today. This series is not about deprivation. It’s about household food economy, resourcefulness, and learning from the wisdom of women who came before us. 📄 Historical source material and references are linked below. 5 Cent Meals Booklet: https://archive.org/details/fivecentm...
