Over 80% of Germans would answer this question with "coffee." We particularly appreciate the caffeinated beverage for its invigorating and performance-enhancing effects. However, many coffee drinkers feel guilty because coffee is sometimes cited as a risk factor for, for example, heart disease or even cancer. To better assess the validity of these claims, I'd like to explore with you today how caffeine and other components of coffee affect our bodies and minds. Why does coffee wake you up? On average, every German consumes 200mg of caffeine daily, mostly with the goal of feeling fitter and more alert. This effect is primarily due to the effect of the caffeine in coffee on the central nervous system (CNS). And this effect occurs quickly: after drinking a cup of coffee, you often feel more energetic after just a few minutes, and the caffeine reaches its maximum blood concentration after about 30 minutes. In "reasonable" doses, meaning from about 85mg up to a maximum of 400mg per day, caffeine has a stimulating effect on the CNS. This occurs by counteracting the neurotransmitter adenosine. Adenosine is produced as a byproduct of energy utilization in nerve cells and serves to protect the brain from overexertion. The more the cells work, the higher their adenosine production. Adenosine molecules bind to cell receptors and, above a certain concentration, signal the cells to reduce their activity and thus the release of excitatory neurotransmitters like adrenaline and dopamine. We notice this as a feeling of fatigue. How does coffee affect our health? For a long time, caffeine was suspected of being harmful to health and shortening life expectancy. However, recent research shows that caffeine's positive effects extend not only to our performance but also to our overall health. For example, caffeine, or rather the sustained release of stress hormones like adrenaline and dopamine, causes blood vessels in the brain to constrict. This is thought to have a pain-relieving effect. Caffeine is therefore an ingredient in several pain relievers. Coffee also influences the function of detoxification organs such as the liver and kidneys. The caffeine in coffee is largely metabolized in the liver and, according to various studies, is said to have a positive effect on the progression of liver fibrosis. Caffeine counteracts this by increasing the concentration of the messenger substance cAMP in liver cells during its breakdown. cAMP inhibits the processes responsible for the transformation of healthy liver cells into scarred tissue.
