It forms part of the Route de la Roche (D211A) and is often referred to as the Auris Balcony Road due to its perilous position. Carved directly into the sheer limestone cliff face high above the Romanche valley, the road is famous for its breathtaking, vertiginous views over the valley floor and the town of Le Bourg-d'Oisans far below. The route is characterized by its narrow width, which often restricts passage to a single vehicle at a time, making it particularly difficult when encountering oncoming traffic. It features several short, unlit tunnels cut straight through the rock.
