Maybe they know it as Europe’s last dictatorship (not quite the right term, a few countries have joined in recent years). They probably don’t know it as an incredibly clean and orderly country that’s incredible to travel. They may not know that Belarus is the country to visit to see Soviet Union history, even moreso than Russia. Belarus…is complicated, and I have a weird history with the country. I first visited in 2020, and by pure coincidence ended up there in the middle of their anti-government protests. 4 years later, I decided to return, as part of an overland trip across Europe and Asia. Let me tell you the story of visa troubles, interrogations, and getting caught in a crossfire.
