Fall Gardening in my Japanese Garden, Preparing for Winter

Fall gardening in my Japanese garden is a time for preparing tropical plants such as the slipper orchids (Paphiopedilum) and cycad collection for the coming winter months. This involves preparing an indoor greenhouse to accommodate them all, and getting the plants themselves spruced up for the long winter rest. Meanwhile the outdoor garden needs cleaning, mostly of falling leaves. The fall flowers are showing themselves as well, for instance the sasanqua camellias, imperial dahlias and the lovely Farfugium japonicum. This also is a time when the famous Japanese giant hornet (AKA “murder hornet”) is its most fierce. In the fall, just before they are about to die in the coming cold, they get very aggressive. In this video you’ll get to see some of these as well, and my nervous glances trying to keep the ones around the yard in view!
