Winter Weather in the Garden - Cold Protection for Plants Outdoors

Winter weather lasts for only a few weeks in my garden, but I still need to use cold protection for some of my outdoor plants. Since I grow some subtropical plants such as tree ferns, orchids, and staghorn ferns in the open garden I have to protect them from cold spells we get here in southern Japan from time to time. In this video you’ll see me wrapping tree ferns in plastic tents which have worked well over the past two winters. This January had a fairly severe cold event combined with snow, so time will tell if my protective measures prove to be effective or not.
