In Italy, many communities are experimenting with different ways of building and living, using natural techniques and alternative materials. In Spartà, near Messina, Eva and Aronne built their house using raw earth, straw, lime, and shives, the woody part of the hemp stalk. This project has become much more than just a home: today, it is a meeting place and a hub for initiatives related to permaculture, sustainability, seed conservation, self-production, and biodiversity protection. The house's structure rests on a foundation of metal gabions filled with stones, anchored with larch beams. The supporting structure, made of laminated wood, extends over three levels. The building integrates various construction techniques and natural materials, including raw earth, straw, lime, and shives—an element that also inspired the house's name. "We don't want to go back in time. We're interested in a sustainable future that combines modern technologies and respect for the environment," explains Eva. "We imagined a house that was also a concrete example of alternatives, both in terms of housing and energy. We recover gray water, use compost toilets to feed the food forest, and live within a true system designed according to the principles of permaculture, which goes far beyond the synergistic garden. This house has become the meeting point of our personal projects, an ecosystem that evolves with us." Change your life, your job... yes, but how?
